Fatigued Driving Prevention Blog

Among the new TLC policies and regulations that are now being implemented, an updated fatigue prevention rule has taken place. The fatigue prevention rule was created to keep both drivers and passengers safe by limiting the drive time each driver is allocated to take per day. With this new rule, passengers will be assured that their driver’s attention will always be focused on the road and that they will make it to their final destination safe and sound.

Within the 10 hour daily driving limit and the 60 hour weekly driving limit, the driver’s driving time is only accounted for when the passenger is in the vehicle for the physical ride. If the passenger is not in the car, then that will not be accounted as driving time, but waiting time. During waiting time, drivers will not be using any of their allocated hours.

The TLC is strictly enforcing these rules. Those who go over the 10 hour daily or 60 hour weekly driving time will risk violating the driving limits and will receive initial warnings to reduce their hours within acceptable limits. After the warnings, drivers will receive a summons for anytime over the limit, unless the trip was dispatched before their 10 hour mark. However, if a driver worked for 9 hours and received a 3-hour driving trip, he will not be penalized for going 12 hours on the day but will count against his weekly 60 hours.

For drivers to maximize their driving time within the TLC’s new driving limits, they should make sure to drive during the peak hours of 5 AM to 9 AM and 1 PM to 7PM, to secure as many rides as possible. As soon as the passenger is out of the car, be mindful that you need to end the shift on the app for the ride to be closed. By following these tips, drivers will be able to make more trips within the time frame, while also keeping their passengers safe during their rides.
