How to Make the Most of Your Hamptons Getaway

When you travel for business, you need to focus on the job. So when you finally get to travel for pleasure, relaxation should be your top priority. Whether you’ll be in the Hamptons for the weekend or the entire summer, a little bit of planning can go far when it comes to making the most of your time away.

1. Don’t Overplan
Ironically, the first step to planning your time in the Hamptons should be to minimize planning. If you travel for business, you’re probably accustomed to planning every little detail of your trip, from when you need to leave to who you’re going to meet. While on vacation, you’ll be able to relax more if you treat your time away differently. While there’s nothing wrong with planning a few activities, try not to budget your time so tightly that you don’t have down time to just unwind. If you’re too busy, you’ll return to work just as tired as when you left.

2. Make Fitness a Priority
While hitting the treadmill might be the furthest thing from your mind during a getaway, fitting in a workout will ultimately make your experience more enjoyable. The endorphins released when you exercise will help put you in a good mood for the rest of the day. You’ll also be more awake and alert as you enjoy the day’s other activities and sleep better at night.

Fitness doesn’t have to be boring. The Hamptons provides fun workout activities like stand-up paddleboarding, an increasingly popular fitness trend. For those looking for something a little more intense, People Magazine reported that actress Gwyneth Paltrow teamed up with fitness professional Tracy Anderson to open a new Tracy Anderson Method studio in East Hampton this summer.

3. Eat Locally
Even with all the changes that the Hamptons have gone through over the years, there are still families who farm and fish in the area just as they have been doing for generations. Take advantage of the availability of fresh food by eating at restaurants that use local ingredients in their cuisine. Consider trying Fishbar in Montauk, whose chef Jennifer Meadows, according to an article in Travel + Leisure, is so friendly with the local fisherman that she radios them to ask about the catch while they’re still at sea.

“It’s best to bike or walk, rather than drive, to the beach.”

4. Choose Beaches Wisely
It’s not a trip to the Hamptons without time at one or more of the area’s pristine beaches. While you can’t really go wrong with any of the options, some shine brighter than others for particular activities. Fodor’s Travel recommends swimmers head to Main Beach in East Hampton, and surfers try out Montauk’s Ditch Plains. Because parking is so difficult around the beaches, it’s better to bike or walk if possible, regardless of your destination.

5. Travel in Style
Start your getaway in comfortable luxury by traveling with GroundLink’s new Hamptons Private Driver.
