LaGuardia Construction Underway: Here’s What Travelers Should Know
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s plan to transform LaGuardia airport is underway, but not without a few hassles for travelers.
Airport construction, which is expected to be ongoing for more than five years, has already changed traffic patterns in and around the airport and closed several parking lots. For travelers this means it’s taking longer to get into and out of the airport.
What can you do?
GroundLink Removes the Stress of LGA Travel
GroundLink customers traveling to LaGuardia airport from New York City are urged to book pickup times no less than 60 minutes before their desired airport arrival time. While our GroundLink drivers are kept informed of traffic delays, construction and lack of parking is making traffic patterns at the airport terminal unpredictable. Our goal is to get you to and from the airport as smooth as possible, but we cannot be held responsible for traffic delays or poorly planned pick up times.
Additionally, with longer wait times to get through security being blamed for missed flights across the country, both the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the TSA urge travelers to give themselves extra time. TSA is recommending passengers arrive at least 2 to 2-and-a-half hours ahead of their scheduled departure time. So keep this is mind when choosing your pick up time.
For customers being picked up at LGA, we recommend outside pickups only. Due to parking garage closures parking is limited, which could force drivers to park at remote lots. To minimize wait time, call your driver once you have your bags and can be ready outside.
Additionally, to avoid wait time fees you can select the “adjust your pickup time” option when you book your reservation. When you enter your flight details select your preferred pick up time— either right after your flight lands or up to two hours after your flight’s arrival. This features gives you the flexibility to take extra time to gather your bags, return calls, grab a bite to eat, or attend a meeting at the airport and avoid unnecessary wait time fees.
While the long overdue LaGuardia update will be a source of frustration for many traveling to and from the airport, the outcome will be a world-class transportation gateway and significant improvements to the traveler experience. Before then, be patient, give yourself extra time, and rely on GroundLink to get you to and from the airport safely, comfortably and on time.
